Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a process heavily reliant on data. In an LCA project, data collected directly from specific operations or processes in the field are referred to as primary data, while data sourced from external databases — providing information on general processes or materials — are known as secondary data.

In most routine LCA studies, the majority of the data used consists of secondary data. These datasets are indispensable: they provide the foundational information necessary for analysis, and without them performing an LCA would be nearly impossible.

Despite their critical role in reducing project costs and streamlining processes, the quality and reliability of secondary data significantly influence the accuracy and credibility of LCA results. Developing and maintaining robust, high-quality databases is therefore essential for meaningful and actionable outcomes.
